What is exercise physiology?
Exercise is medicine. As such, no evidence-based healthcare team is complete without the services of an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP). AEP’s utilise the knowledge they have acquired from their 4-year university degree to understand physiology (understanding how the body works) and apply exercise science to help you achieve your performance or health goals.
The advantage of seeking the guidance of an AEP is to receive a personalised program to improve your health, while also working in a graded fashion to avoid injury and promote optimal performance. Our AEPs will prescribe effective exercise programs for rehabilitation and relief from pain as well as using their knowledge to help manage many chronic health conditions such as but not limited to heart disease, mental health disorders and osteoarthritis.

Exercise Physiology FAQs
What is the difference between an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) and a Personal Trainer?
AEPs are experts in exercise assessment and prescription and usually work with people with acute or chronic conditions and injuries. On top of utilising their knowledge of human physiology and exercise science, AEPs will also consider the role of lifestyle management and behavioural change to optimise the achievement of your health goals.
What happens during my first appointment?
Your first appointment will involve an in-depth assessment of your medical history, physical limitations and lifestyle factors to work out the most suitable plan for you. The assessment will also include some basic fitness testing, tailored to your individual presentation. Your goals and exercise plan will be constructed from all of this information.
What should I bring to my first appointment? What should I wear to my appointment?
For your first appointment, you need to be in clothes and footwear that are suitable and comfortable for light exercise and a range of movements. We also strongly advise bringing a water bottle and gym towel to your first and all subsequent appointments. If possible, it would help our AEPs if you are able to bring any relevant information about your current medical conditions or injuries (medication names, recent blood results, scans for example). Please also bring your puffer if you experience exercise-induced asthma.
What happens during my second and subsequent appointments?
Subsequent appointments will involve reviewing your progress, performing the exercises that have been prescribed to continue to work towards your goals. Your individualised plan may require face-to-face appointments, home/gym programs or more scattered reviews.
Can I claim exercise physiology on private health insurance or Medicare?
Exercise Physiology is usually covered by all major private health funds under their ‘extras’ cover. The benefit paid for exercise physiology services varies depending on your level of cover, and annual limits do apply. For more information, please check with your private health fund.
You may be referred to us by your General Practitioner under the Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Program, previously known as the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Program. Under your CDM referral, you will be able to claim a portion of your fees from Medicare, up to a maximum of 5 visits each year.
Do you accept RTWSA and DVA referrals?
Yes, we do! If you would like to claim your exercise physiology consultations under RTWSA, please ensure you bring all relevant documentation (including your claim number, insurance company, and case manager’s name and contact details) to your first appointment.
For DVA clients, please ensure you bring with you a valid referral from your general practitioner for exercise physiology services.
